Stick vs. Gasless MIG Welding – What Should You Use for DIY Furniture?

Stick vs. Gasless MIG Welding – What Should You Use for DIY Furniture?

When I started getting into welding, I was super confused about the terms: MIG, MMA, Flux-Core, gasless, etc. Let’s simplify one thing—Gasless MIG is also called Flux-Core MIG, and it’s different from traditional MIG that needs a gas tank.

If you’re building furniture at home, here’s what I learned after doing my own research:

What is Gasless MIG Welding?

Gasless MIG (Flux-Core MIG) uses a special wire that has flux built inside. When the wire melts, it creates a shield over the weld—so you don’t need a gas tank.

✅ Works even when it’s windy (no gas to blow away)
✅ Wire feeds automatically, so it’s easier for beginners
✅ Smoother welds than MMA
🚫 Not as clean as real MIG with gas
✅ Perfect for thin metal and DIY steel furniture

MMA (Stick) vs. Gasless MIG – Quick Comparison

FeatureStick Welding (MMA)Gasless MIG
Ease of UseHarder to start, rods can stickEasier, just pull the trigger
Metal ThicknessBest for 3mm and thickerBest for 1mm to 4mm
Weld QualityRougher welds, more spatterCleaner welds than Stick
Equipment CostCheaper (₱3,500–₱5,500)Pricier (₱7,000–₱12,000)
PortabilityVery light & compactA bit heavier, still portable
Outdoor UseGreat, even on rusty metalGreat, but works better on clean steel

My Suggestion for DIY Projects

If you’re new and planning to weld steel tubes or angle bars for shelves, tables, or stands—Gasless MIG is the better option. It’s easier, cleaner, and faster to learn than MMA.
