When you’re shopping for your first welding machine, especially online like on Shopee or Lazada, it’s easy to get confused. Some listings just say “300A Inverter Welding Machine” but don’t explain if it’s MIG or MMA.
So here’s a simple guide to help you figure it out:
1. Check the Label or Product Description
Look for these words:
- If it says MMA, ARC, or Stick Welding → it’s a Stick Welder (also called MMA).
- If it says MIG, MAG, or Flux-Core → it’s a MIG Welder.
2. Look at the Torch or Electrode Clamp
- MMA welders have an electrode holder—a clamp where you insert welding rods (sticks).
- MIG welders have a torch/gun with a trigger that automatically feeds wire from a spool.
3. Look for a Wire Feed System
- MIG machines will have a compartment inside for a wire spool and a wire feeder.
- MMA machines don’t have this. No wire spool, just rods.
4. Check for a Gas Input Port
- MIG welders (gas type) will have a gas hose connector for CO₂ or Argon.
- Gasless MIG has no gas port but still uses wire.
- MMA welders never need gas—so they won’t have this feature.
✅ Quick Tip
If you’re looking at a unit and you see it only comes with:
- An electrode holder + ground clamp → MMA
- A torch + wire spool area inside + possibly gas input → MIG
That’s the easiest way to tell the difference!
